Lake Erie access rule may rock the boat(ToldeoBlade.com)
"A ruling that could hamper the public’s access to Lake Erie beaches came out last week while ironically, we all were slogging through our cold, wintry mix of freezing rain and snow. No doubt it would have received more attention if it had been issued in July. Critics fear the Lake County Common Pleas Court decision will further erode the Great Lakes region’s shoreline access. It defines the public-private boundary line as the ever-shifting “water’s edge,” not the high water mark."

Excerpt From Lorain Morning Journal
"PERKINS TOWNSHIP: The Vermilion River could become Ohio's 14th scenic river if approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
The Erie County Commission voted 3-0 today to support efforts to earn the designation for the river. The designation could be months away, as a study team first makes a recommendation to the ODNR director, who then holds a public comment period before the final stamp of approval."

Great Lakes see a future beyond industry (USA TODAY)
Below are quotes from a great article in the USA today featuring Vermilion's own Chris Gillcrist, about the struggles of industrial towns as they try to convert to tourism and housing based.
"People forget that the Great Lakes were the superhighway of North America for 150 years," says historian Christopher Gillcrist, executive director of the Great Lakes Historical Society in Vermilion, Ohio. In the early 1900s, the Great Lakes transformed America through the development of steel mills and related industries."
"Today, the political and economic clout of tourism and real estate development is rising, especially at the state and local level. The influence of heavy industry has been sapped by the decline of industrial jobs through factory closings, automation and foreign competition."
