Computer aid for anglers (The Columbus Dispatch)
Hesitancy about hitting waters unknown no longer need be a reason for central Ohio anglers to avoid the steelhead runs soon to peak along the Lake Erie shore. A series of detailed stream maps put together by fisherman/entrepreneur Ron Guttu dispels much of the mystery about where to fish on the steelhead-stocked streams of northern Ohio. The hefty, lake-run rainbow trout grow especially numerous from February into April, and they're usually willing to play rough with savvy casters and drifters who know where to find their haunts.

Lake Erie Near Average Amoung Great Lakes Levels
The US Army Corp of Engineers have released a long term forecast which predicts some of the Great Lakes will see a dip in water levels in the coming year. According to the Army Corp's forecasters Lake Michigan and Lake Huron will be 20 to 22 inches below their normal averages. Lake St. Clair will be 5 to 12 inches lower than its average and Lake Erie will remain fairly steady with only a 2 to 9 inches difference, similar to Lake Superior. The study blames that relatively mild winters that the Midwest has experienced in the last two to three years. In the short term that is good news for Lake Eire boaters, the long term outlook remains unclear as much of the forecasting in based on ever changing weather patterns.
2008 LAKE ERIE FISHING OUTLOOK IS GREAT!(ODNR)
2003 hatches of walleye and yellow perch should provide excellent angling opportunities
COLUMBUS, OH - Lake Erie anglers should enjoy another year of exceptional fishing in 2008, according to biologists with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
"Lake Erie remains one of the greatest natural resources in our country," said Roger Knight, Lake Erie fisheries program manager at ODNR. "Where else but Lake Erie can an angler find such diversity of fish species and sizes? We anticipate excellent fishing opportunities once again this year for walleye and yellow perch, as well as strong fisheries for other species like smallmouth bass, white bass and steelhead."
YELLOW PERCH DAILY BAG LIMIT COULD BE REDUCED IN WESTERN LAKE ERIE (ODNR)
COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio Wildlife Council is considering a proposal to reduce the Lake Erie yellow perch daily bag limit in Ohio waters west of Huron, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
Under a rule change proposed Wednesday, the daily bag limit for yellow perch would drop from 30 to 25 fish per angler, but only in waters west of Huron. The daily bag limit will remain at 30 fish per angler in Ohio waters from Huron eastward.
The council also heard a proposal to reduce the statewide daily bag limit for muskellunge from two fish to one fish.
In addition, four lakes owned by the Division of Wildlife would allow access to motorboats greater than 10 horsepower as long as they operate at idle speed. These lakes include, Knox Lake in Knox County, Lake La Su An in Williams County, Oxbow Lake in Defiance County, and Rupert Lake in Vinton County. Additionally, 10-horsepower motors would now be allowed on Greenfield Lake and Rockmill Lake in Fairfield County.
Open houses will be held on Sunday, March 2 in each of the state's five wildlife district offices to provide the public an opportunity to view and discuss proposed hunting and trapping regulations with state wildlife officials. Directions to the open houses can be obtained by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE or visiting wildohio.com on the Internet.
A statewide hearing on all the proposed wildlife rules will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 6 at the division's District One Office, located at 1500 Dublin Road in Columbus. After considering public input, the Ohio Wildlife Council will vote on the proposed rules during its April 2 meeting.

Ohio Watercraft Registrations Top 415,000 (ODNR)
COLUMBUS, OH - The total number of registered watercraft hit 415,562 in Ohio last year, proving that boating remains one of the state's most popular recreational activities. The number is the fifth-highest registration total in the state's history, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft.
The 2007 figure represent an increase of 2,984 boats from the 412,578 registered in 2006. It is the fifth time Ohio's boat registrations topped the 415,000 mark. The state registered an all-time high of 418,701 watercraft in 2000.
"Ohio enjoys a variety of popular boating destinations, including Lake Erie, the Ohio River, more than 200 inland lakes and thousands of miles of inland rivers and streams - some with designated water trails," said Pamela Dillon, chief of the Division of Watercraft. "These many recreational opportunities keep us in the top 10 of boating states nationwide."
Trend data since 2000 reveals a continued decline in powerboat registrations, coupled with a sharp increase in hand-propelled boats such as canoes and kayaks, according to Division of Watercraft figures. Some of the decline in registrations seen in urban counties such as Franklin, Cuyahoga and Hamilton has been offset by increases in adjacent metropolitan counties such as Delaware, Lake and Warren - likely the result of suburban development.
Franklin County again topped the 2007 list with the highest number of registered watercraft at 26,376. Other counties with high registration numbers were: Cuyahoga - 24,391; Summit - 19,356; Hamilton - 17,903; and Montgomery - 15,512. Noble County registered the fewest number of watercraft - 600.
